To make your pictures larger or smaller, when you're uploading them, select a different size on the right bottom corner, or when you're still editing a post, you can manually change the size!
I'll be reading your comments on the header because I've been wondering that myself. As for the photos, when they pop up in your text box as you are writing, if you click on the photo you will see it will be outlined with little squares on the corners and sides. Grab a corner and pull on it. This can also make photo smaller. Hope this helps.
So how do you creative beauties do it? I want to put a pic in that will fill the header space.

I'm not sure myself. My sunset header just turned out big.
