A BIG THANK YOU!

This evening I found a little package at my door. What could it be?
Inside was the most darling pill box and luggage tag!
OK Ronda! How nice are you? What if I said I liked your wallet... with all your money in it?
Seriously, I loved the pill box for your bag tag, you know that. And I want you to know that I am sooo happy that you sent me one too.
Why?
Because I have the hormones to fill it! (estrogen!)

And a sincere and heartfelt thanks for the fab luggage tag as well.
XOXO

Lacrosse gifts

I know Spring is coming because I am receiving a lot of requests for lacrosse gifts.  Most people want items with their team color or items that their fans can wear. Our most popular items are the sterling lacrosse sticks on cord (ask Tami!) and the key fobs. I also sell a ton of note cards. There just isn't that much lacrosse gift items out there!
Come to www.preppyplayer.com for your preppy lacrosse gifts!

Just thinking...

When you are working on your blog....
Do you say,
"I am online."
or
"I am on the Internet."
I am wondering about this and I have theory about who says what. So please let me know what YOU would say.

Ready for Spring?

My header says it all!
Thanks for the help on the formatting. This header is temporary until I find the perfect pic!

Header pic Help!

So how do you creative beauties do it? I want to put a pic in that will fill the header space.
Also, how do you make post pictures bigger? Do I choose a different template?
All important questions!
Any answers?

Spring cleaning?

The warm air and sunny, blue sky invigorates me. I have energy again.
It's time.
It's time to hit those closets and drawers.
And purge.
Oh yes, at this time of the year it is so easy for me to get rid of things, stuff.
The only problem is I live with pack rats, hoarders. So, I have to make sure it is a garbage day when I do my purge of :
Stuff we do NOT need.
Because, inevitably Kevin will be found rummaging through the garbage shouting, "I need this!" or " WHAT!!! I love this, how could she throw this way?"
Notice the "she." Because Dad is a saver, collector, the opposite of "she." He knows that Dad would never throw "stuff" away.
But "she" will, oh yes...she will.
TODAY.

Lenten beef...

I love Trader Joe's. Plain and simple.
But I have a huge beef with them on Fridays during Lent.
 ( total oxymoron!)

A little background first- I live in Northern NJ. Most of us who live here, not all, are Catholic or Jewish. We have a huge Italian, (surprise, surprise) Irish, and Hispanic population. All (traditionally) of Catholic faith. I am so used to everyone being cognisant of that, sensitive to those of us who try to be observant and not eat meat on Fridays during Lent.

The last two Fridays I have shopped at Trader Joe's, not only did they have THE best samples EVER, of course they were meat- pork no less.
How ironic is that?!
The Catholic AND the Jewish customers couldn't have a taste!
Do you think the management is in touch with their clientele?
I think not.
And as for Kevin and I trying to be observant...
I guess it isn't suppose to be easy!

Where have I been? Hmmm.....

Well on Wednesday I was in the Bronx watching my daughter's lacrosse team get their butts kicked by Manhattan College.
Very cold.
Not fun.
Not good.
On Thursday I went to Martha! Unfortunately it wasn't the Lily Pulitzer show, that will be taped on Wednesday. Instead, it was a live show that was...boring. The theme was Atlanta and the first two segments we saw video on the Atlanta aquarium, that was the best part!

Then she had her guest, Kenan Thompson ( young guy from SNL) help her make fish print t-shirts... Totally out of his element, honestly you could see that it was really awkward for him and that he was going to be making a call to his agent as soon as he was off set! He was a very good sport, to say the least. And funny enough, his t-shirt actually turned out better than Martha's!!

After that Martha made crab cakes with a chef from Atlanta. That was interesting, but we were starving! It smelled so good and the audience was not offered samples. There wasn't give-aways of any kind. And, because it was live there was only one show instead of two taped.
*Remember that. If you ever get tickets to Martha Stewart , do not go on Thursday as that is the live day.

We still had a great time and after the show we went to Pastis for lunch, saw John McEnroe while we were there!
So, while enjoying a beautiful day in New York we were able to see a convicted felon, (Martha) and Tennis' wild child/bad boy, (John McEnroe)
How's that?

Thinking ahead...

Some of you may remember our family Christmas card photo shoot debacle...
It wasn't pretty.
So, I am very excited that I have already scheduled a Christmas photo shoot that will take place this spring in NYC with this fabulous photographer:
If you like or follow the blog, The Nie Nie dialogues , you will recognize Wendy's wonderful style. In fact the gorgeous family portrait of Stephanie Neilson and her family is what made me choose this photographer based in Utah. Because my family lives in Utah I figured we would incorporate a photo shoot with a trip out to visit. It wasn't going to be easy to get all seven of us out at the same time...
Then I found out that she was scheduling in NYC!

The Neilson Family
This is our family photo from 2007. (please disregard the woman in white.) I am looking forward to a new family portrait, drenched in color- Wendy's style.
Please check out her website so you can see what I mean.

Hampton classic & the Garden State Horse Show

This is the time of year I decide what events I will be selling at. This year I have contracts going out for the Hampton Classic and The Garden State Horse Show. At the shows I will sell horse theme jewelry, hair accessories and gifts. I will also sell items that are VERY preppy.

I've never sold at the Hampton Classic, mainly because it is an eight day show. That is a big commitment for me. Has any of you ever attended this show? If so, what do you think?

Find these equestrian gifts at HORSES

Spring wish list

Do you remember this amazing barn jacket I ordered last fall? It was on sale and I am planning on wearing it in the near future.
 Love. It.
Well, since it is another snow day I decided to a little surfing/shopping in preparation for warmer months-
Wishful thinking, right?
I went back to the website where I scored the Fab field coat and found these adorable skirts!
Can't you just picture, a colorful polo or tank, flip flops and this skirt??
Or a white blouse and white sandals?
Or how about a pale yellow or pink tee with some topsiders?
And?
They are on sale! $67.50 down from $135.

Lafayette women's lacrosse vs. Columbia University

Bummer. After an amazing first half, Lafayette went on to lose to Columbia. Michaela had a goal and an assist. She thought she could have done more and plans on it next game.
 Positive thinking.
Here is the game info :  Lafayette vs. Columbia
On another, happier note- we had a great tailgate as usual. Even the photo saboteur showed up.
Annoyingly so.
The girls always join us after their coach has spoken to them and they have been to the locker rooms to shower/change. They  usually go right to their families for encouragement, commiseration, and hugs- then on to the FOOD!

For some reason, at this VERY cold tailgate we had a ton of dessert and no one was complaining!
Marc is always looking for healthy choices, but lets it go at the tailgates.

These brave men grilled us amazing hamburger, hot dogs and steaks all outside our tent. It was so cold!
Next game?
Manhattan College on Wednesday and then Navy on Saturday.

In conclusion...

March is a crazy month.
You know- "in like a lion, out like a lamb?"
In the winter of 1994, I don't think there was one day that there wasn't snow on the ground. It NEVER melted. I think it was late April before we had any melt. But, there were some freak days.
March 13, 1994 was a freak day-in more ways than one.

On that day, it was unseasonably warm, 70 degrees!
It was so weird because there was two feet of ice-hard snow in our yard, yet the kids were out with their coats off. It felt like Spring, but it wasn't.

Our life was settling down. Becky was now eight weeks old, she wasn't sleeping a lot, but she was now a part of our family routine. The boys were helping more with Sparky, taking him for walks and making sure he had exercise. Sparky's leg was really dragging and it was time to decide what to do.

Here are some things I remember from that day:
We had ordered new chairs for our dining room and they were coming that afternoon. Marc was up in Connecticut on business. The boys did not have any sports after school. Michaela didn't have nursery school. It was a relaxing, low stress day.

After I picked up the boys from school and gave them a snack I asked Josh to put Sparky outside. I knew the delivery men would be there soon with the new chairs. Sparky was VERY protective and I didn't want any problems. Plus, it was so beautiful out, I thought Sparky would be fine on a line we had out near a dog run and doghouse in our backyard. I knew Sparky wouldn't last long because he only wanted to be near us and would whine and cry if we left him out too long.

The men came and delivered the chairs. Josh helped me unwrap them and check for any  damages or defects.  An hour had passed. I looked out the picture window and could see Sparky in his doghouse. I remember thinking, "Wow, Sparky's been so good today! He hasn't barked or whined yet." I decided since it was so nice out and he seemed happy I would leave him out a bit longer.

But then I noticed something. I called Josh over to the window. I said, "Josh, what is that red stuff on the snow around the dog house? Do you think that Sparky has been chewing on his boots?" ( they were red)  he said, I don't know, I'm not sure I remembered to put them on."
Then as I went to nag him about  how important it was to put the boots on Sparky, that he has been obsessively licking his paw... Sparky came out of his dog house.

HOLY SHIT!!!! His leg was gone!!!!

No lie. I started to hyperventilate. I had a baby on my shoulder, a boy who was obviously going into shock as it was the most gruesome sight you could imagine.
And, there was Sparky wagging his tail. No blood was flowing, but he was looking shaky and wobbly.
I ran to the phone and called my husband, who happened to have what we used to call a "car phone." I was hysterical. I said, " Marc, Sparky's leg is GONE!!" He's like, "what are you talking about?" I tried to calm down. He told me to call the police and they would help me get Sparky to the animal hospital.

And I did.  They were there in minutes. Luckily it was the canine officer, who loved animals and was very sensitive, empathetic, and wise. As I was speaking to him I was putting blankets in my suburban to get it ready to transport Sparky, the officer asked me what I was doing and I told him. He looked at me like I was crazy. He said, "Patty, I've already called the Vet and he is on his way over. You can't transport that dog, in fact, I don't want you to go near him."  I think I was in shock at that point.

Three Vets came to get Sparky. I felt so sorry for the poor dog. He was beginning to bark and I could tell he was scared as they approached him. But, they were able to give him a sedative and quickly bind the wound. We spoke for a few minutes and then they rushed him to the animal hospital.

What happened?
Well according to the Vet, Sparky must have had no feeling in his leg up to his shoulder. And, due to the constant licking, when I put him out on that beautiful spring-like day,  it was as if I had put him outside with a huge milk bone. Sparky didn't realize that he was chewing on his own meat.
And, what saved his life?
The vet said he must have been leaning out of the doghouse, onto the rock-hard snow. That ice kept him from bleeding to death. He hadn't stood up until he began to have feeling, that may have helped as well.

Three days later Sparky was home. He had many stitches and any excess bone was amputated.
He was fine.
We weren't.
I had nightmares and reoccurring flashbacks for months afterwards. It was such a shocking event and I had so much guilt. I felt like I should have known something would happen. I knew he didn't like to be away from us, did I leave him too long? I felt guilty that I didn't approach him with the Vets as I knew he was scared. I wished that we had amputated right after the accident so that this wouldn't have happened.
Josh was traumatized as well. He wouldn't let Sparky out of sight. I think Sparky slept on Josh's bed for years after that.

This all happened when Sparky was two years old, he went on to live many more years. He had plenty more adventures, not always good. But we think of him with love and fond memories.
Most of the time.

The most unforgettable day...

It really was the most unforgettable day. Not the day Sparky was hit.
The day, two months later.

The morning after I had Becky, Marc came to the hospital with good news. Sparky had internal injuries, but will be fine.
 Great! Excited!
But then Marc said the bad news, that due to the internal injuries the Vet wasn't sure if Sparky would have use of his left, front leg as there appeared to be nerve damage. It was a wait and see situation. What was the alternative?
Amputation.
We were so relieved that Sparky was alive and would be fine ( relatively) that we put that to the back of our minds. We happily told the kids that Sparky was coming home.

So, in the winter of 1994 there I was, with a new baby, 3 little kids, my husband working all the time and a crippled dog. Now Sparky was doing well, considering the injury. The Vet told us that they weren't sure how much feeling was left in the leg, they knew he wouldn't feel pain, they just weren't sure if this was temporary or how far up the leg he had no feeling.

Right from the minute he came home he was eating and playing. Within a day or two he was up and down the stairs. He could go outside and do his business, although forever more he peed like a girl.

The problem was all the ice and snow. The muscle in his leg was beginning to atrophy and the leg began to drag. His paw was getting cut up and would bleed. It didn't bother him, but he was constantly licking it. I didn't like the blood that was getting all over the house and I was concerned with the constant licking, so I called the Vet. He suggested getting little rubber boots to protect the paw whenever we brought Sparky out. We bought them right away.

This worked for awhile. I was always hollering at the boys to make sure Sparky's boots were on and I felt as though I was always looking for them. Sparky's leg was dragging more and more. Marc and I began to discuss the option of amputation.
Not an easy discussion.
I was concerned about the recuperation. Would I have to lift him to go outside, could I? What was the cost? Would it be painful? We still had hope that Sparky's nerves would rejuvenate and feeling would come back, although the hope was diminishing day by day.
Marc was fixated on Sparky being able to swim for some odd reason...

Before we could find out the answers to our questions and concerns something happened.
Something unbelievable.

Stay tuned,
tonight I will post about that unbelievable day!

Happy Birthday Joyce!!!

If you haven't already, please make sure you wish Joyce a very happy birthday at:

She is a February angel every day of the year!

Sparky Malarkey

Malarkey-something that does not have or make sense.

The story I am about to tell is senseless. But, know that in the end...it is NOT sad.

A college girl who had tried to have a puppy in her dorm, couldn't handle it after a few months and was looking for a home for an odd looking Dalmatian. The puppy wasn't trained and was very high strung as Dals are known to be. We decided to adopt this pup and soon had a nine month-old Sparky in our home.

I don't know if you know this, but Dalmatians spots do not develop until they are a bit older. So here we were with a strong, feisty, creme colored puppy. He was a happy-go-lucky type of personality and we were really enjoying him. Very soon after we adopted him I became pregnant with my fourth child, Becky.

The winter I was pregnant with Becky was 1994, the winter of many blizzards. Not easy when you have a 70lb puppy that needed to go out- a lot.  The kids couldn't really handle him on walks because if he saw a squirrel, chipmunk, or another dog he would take off pulling them in the process.

So it fell to me. Of course I was huge. But, he listened to me. So I began to train him to stay in the yard. I could just let him out the door and he would come right in when he was done with his business. Even he didn't want to be out in the frigid cold, ice and snow.

We lived on a quiet street back by some woods. The only traffic we had was from the town road crew first thing in the morning and at 5pm at the end of their day. The kids could play in the street, ride bikes, or cross to visit neighbors without me worrying.

Becky's due date came and went. Finally my doctor decided to set a date to induce me and I was so relieved, she was already ten days late. Of course there was another blizzard on its way. So my husband came home early from work. The roads were already treacherous and we planned to leave early for the hospital. My mom was there to help with the kids. Everything was set. We decided to have  dinner together before we left.

As my mother and I made dinner, Marc went outside to shovel the walk and driveway.  The kids and Sparky went outside to play. I could see them from the kitchen window. They were having so much fun. The boys were having a snowball fight and Sparky was chasing the snowballs trying to catch them and when he would? He would be so surprised as they would disintegrate.
It was so funny and cute. As I looked out the window I thought to myself, this is like a Norman Rockwell winter scene.

It began to get dark and dinner was almost ready. As I looked out the window I could see that my husband was helping our elderly neighbor by snowplowing her driveway. I was glad but remember thinking that we really didn't have time for "extra" snow removal as we had to still eat and leave. Just as I was about to go to the door to call everyone in I saw a truck with a snowplow coming up our street, fast.  At the same time I saw Sparky, who was still creme colored,  playfully leap into the street.
He was hit right away. And I saw it all.

I began to scream. My Mom realized what had happened and was trying to calm me.  I ran outside to get my husband. My oldest son was screaming and crying on his knees in a snow drift. My other son had joined the men who had hit Sparky.

I will never forget it. Sparky was laying on the ground in front of the truck with the headlights shining on him, still breathing. The men were just looking at him. All I could hear was the snow blower. My husband was oblivious to what had happened. I screamed for my sons to "Go get Dad!" They did and he came running.

The odd thing was that there wasn't any blood or cuts. Marc scooped him up, put him in the truck and ran him to the animal hospital. I was left with three hysterical children. As I tried to calm them down  I was very nervous because I wasn't sure if Sparky would live. Within an hour Marc was home. he said the vets were still examining Sparky and were not sure what the outcome would be. In shock from the entire event, I fed my husband and then went to the hospital and had my fourth child.

To be continued....

Careful. The next installment contains the gruesome part.

Sparky- the wonder dog

Our dog Sparky was a three-legged Dalmation. We had him for thirteen years. His is a long and interesting story, a gruesome one as well.
You can't tell from the picture, but he was a liver-spotted, (brown) Dal.  He had one blue eye and one greenish brown. He was very friendly, loyal, loved kids and adults, and very smart.
All good things.
Unfortunately, he definitely needed more training than we were able to give and because of this was endlessly getting into trouble.
Think-ADD dog style!
He respected my husband and I and we were certainly the head of the pack, but he thought he was next in line and would not listen or obey ANYONE else. If we were in the kitchen he would never take something from the counter or get into the garbage, but- if we weren't?
All bets were off. He would take sandwich's right out of the kid's hands!
Sparky was a puppy for about eight years. Seriously. He would cry when we would go to bed and leave him. We couldn't allow him into our bedrooms because he would chew or get into something-this went on for years!

Tomorrow I will tell you the story of how he ended up with three legs-do not eat while you are reading.

paddle tournament

That's what I've been up to ALL day.
Not a bad day- playing my favorite sport for hours, having a beautiful luncheon, socializing and playing with old and new friends, and going home with a new paddle sweatshirt.
Now it would have been better if we won more...
Next time.

HELP me solve the mystery!

Something strange is going on...
For some reason, and I am hoping one of you can help me solve this, I am getting hits every two minutes, (no exaggeration) on a post I did on critter pants back in December!
They are all coming from a TV guide feed!
How crazy is that?
I've done some sleuthing and still cannot figure it out.
Check my live site feed, IT"S CRAZY!!
Please help me solve this!
*It's solved, thanks to kate at Nautical by Nature!

My new love...

Prosecco.
Ever since a few of the girls from my book group went to Italy I have loved Prosecco. They said that in Italy it was used as an aperitif. The perfect accompaniment to antipastos or appetizers.
Prosecco is dry and bubbly, very bubbly.
I really enjoy it with anything salty, like cheese and olives.
Many people compare or confuse Prosecco with champagne. you shouldn't as the price and taste is decidedly different.
If you are looking for something that Venetians consider a apperitivo or ombrette (pick me up)
Prosecco is the right choice.
I am enjoying one right now.

Readers Shmeaders!

A lot of us need Readers.
Some of you don't... but you will!
I am considering selling readers for many different reasons. First, I think that people, (like me) tend to forget to bring their readers to sporting events thinking they won't need them...
Then they are given a program and guess what?
THEY CAN'T READ IT!
Obviously this has happened to me. It is beyond frustrating.
Another reason I would like to sell readers is that I found an amazing company, ( all glasses shown above) that sells very stylish readers at more than reasonable prices.

Not only would I be able to afford readers to put in my car, by the phone, in my purse, coat pocket, gym bag, and tennis bag- but I can pass on the deals to my customers!
I love that.

My girl, my niece.

This little honey is my youngest niece, the Frau's too! Her birthday was this past weekend and she spent it in Utah skiing. Now she is home and I think we have to do something special for her....

Starting to plan Spring offerings...

I am starting to plan what I will be selling this Spring and Summer, always looking for the next "new" thing that everybody has to have! I will be at the Accessory Show in NYC later this week. I am beginning to add apparel to what I sell, all items with a "preppy" style.

One company I am interested in is the PINK FISHING LINE.
The owner/designer of The PINK FISHING LINE wanted to provide nice tee's for girls/women who love to fish.
I think the line is really fun, especially this pink tee.
I know Kate from Nautical by Nature and Ina would like this- What do you think?

USTA Tennis

My paddle partner and friend, Jan,  told me that she had a tennis match last night.
 I was surprised.
Especially when I found out she was playing USTA mixed doubles. It actually is wonderful for her because she is newly divorced and it would be an excellent way for her to meet new people and get out.
That isn't what surprised me.
What surprised me is that I started thinking of tennis again, USTA in particular.
You see, I use to be a tennis nut. I played on a  USTA mixed doubles team,  a Usta women's doubles team, women's outdoor team and on an inter club team...all at the same time.
CRAZY.
Of course I would never play at that level again because I don't train, drill, or care enough.
But I think I am interested in playing USTA this Spring...
Surprising.

Lafayette vs St. Joe's

So, they lost today.
Big time.
It can only get better.
Lafayette Women's Lacrosse parents sure know how to throw an amazing tailgate though!
Always looking for the positives :)
I'll take pictures when Lafayette plays Columbia University next Saturday- seeing is believing!

Sleepovers- pro or con?

First off, I loved sleepovers when I was a child/teenager. I have many fond memories of midnight raids of the fridge, late night giggling, prank phone calling, and big secrets shared.

I also remember my mother saying, "no more sleepovers!" Until time would pass and she would forget just how cranky I was the day after the last sleepover.

And here I am. I hate when my kids sleepover at their friend's house!
The next day?
WE pay all day.
We have a cranky, irritable kid who doesn't want to do anything asked and who is unable to tolerate a"no" without a tantrum.

And sleepovers at our house?
Just as bad!
How many times do I have to go up the stairs and say, "Girls! You must go to sleep!"

Or, the last minute sleepover- when my daughter calls at 11pm and says, "Can such and such sleepover?"
Of course I say yes, (as I remember how much I loved sleepovers when I was young, Blah, blah, blah,)
And then I realize that we won't have enough milk/juice/food for extra guests in the morning and I better hightail it to the A&P before they close!!

Whew! Truly exhausting.
What do you think?  ( Remember I am a cranky, peri-menopausal mother of five, now dealing with  the sleepovers of my last two children, I use to be nicer.)

Hervé Chapelier Redux

So, here we are... back talking about Herve Chapelier bags.
Love them. What's out for Spring 2009? A lot.
But here are the best:

The totes are just right and retail for $138. The backpack retails for $$106.
The pochette is $38. I like to put a bit of money, a few credit cards, make-up and my cell in it and then just move it from bag to bag. Makes life easier.
Did I mention that these chic french bags are washable?
